Why I Chose to Serve Those Who Serve

There are some things in life that become part of you long before you ever realize they are shaping your purpose.

For me, serving Heroes is one of them.

Long before I became a Realtor and long before Homes for Heroes® became part of my business, the Hero community was already woven into my life. Military service, law enforcement, firefighters and first responders, healthcare professionals, and educators aren't simply groups of people I market to.

They are my family. They are my friends. They are the people I have spent much of my life surrounded by.

Serving others is simply a world I know and love.

But over the years, the word Hero became much more personal to me.

During some of the most difficult moments my family has ever faced, Heroes showed up.

When someone I love desperately needed help, there were people working tirelessly around the clock, doing everything within their power to save a life and provide the very best care possible.

Months later, my family found ourselves needing Heroes again.

And when circumstances changed and there was no longer anything that could be done to change the outcome, those same kinds of Heroes showed us something else.

Compassion.

Tenderness.

Dignity.

Humanity.

There are moments from those experiences that will remain private because they belong to my family. But there is something I will gladly share:

So many times, a Hero has impacted my family and never had a clue about the impact they left on my heart.

They were doing their jobs.

They probably went home at the end of their shifts thinking about the next patient, the next call, the next classroom, the next family or whatever awaited them the following day.

But I remembered.

I still remember.

When Real Estate Became a Way to Say Thank You

When I discovered Homes for Heroes®, something clicked.

Here was an opportunity to take the career I love and connect it to something that had been part of my life for years: serving the people who spend their lives serving others.

Homes for Heroes helps eligible community Heroes when they buy or sell a home, including military members and veterans, law enforcement, firefighters and EMS, healthcare professionals, and teachers.

But for me, this has never been about attaching a program to a real estate transaction.

It's personal.

Every Hero family I have the privilege of helping represents another opportunity to say:

I see what you do. I appreciate what you do. And this time, I get to serve you.

I can't repay the people who have shown up for my family over the years.

I don't even know all of their names.

But I can give back to the Hero standing in front of me today.

One Hero. One family. One home at a time.

And if I can make their journey to homeownership a little easier, advocate fiercely for them throughout the process, help them understand their options, and make sure they receive every benefit available to them, then that is one small way I can say thank you.

That's why I'm beginning this weekly series.

The Hero Homefront will be a place where we talk honestly about homeownership, buying, selling, VA loans, relocation, Hero resources, our Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia communities, and the questions real people have about real estate.

Sometimes we'll talk numbers.

Sometimes we'll teach.

Sometimes we'll tell stories.

And sometimes we'll simply celebrate the extraordinary people who quietly serve our communities every single day.

Because behind every uniform, badge, set of scrubs, fire engine, ambulance and classroom door is a person.

A family.

A story.

And quite often, a dream of home.

To every Hero who has ever shown up for my family—and to every Hero who gets up tomorrow and shows up for someone else's:

Thank you.

Giving back to you, one Hero at a time, is the least I can do.
